The Guardian media section (of 19 December 2008) has confirmed that the BBC has commissioned a second series of Survivors, and that a further set of six episodes will go into production early next year for transmission later in 2009.

Survivors gets second series on BBC

The BBC has commissioned a second six-part series of Adrian Hodges’ post-apocalyptic drama Survivors before the first run has finished.

The first series has been a ratings success for the corporation, averaging 5.9 million viewers and a 23% audience share in its Tuesday 9pm timeslot.

Like the original 1970s version, scripted by Daleks creator Terry Nation, the Hodges series was set in the UK after a virus had wiped out at least 90% of the world’s population. The original Survivors series first aired in 1975 and ran for 38 episodes over three series.

The final episode in the current series, which follows the disparate group of survivors trying to build a new life, screens on BBC1 on December 23rd at 9pm.

Hodges, who was also behind Primeval and Charles II, will return to executive produce the second series of six episodes next year.

The cast including Julie Graham, Max Beesley and Phillip Rhys will return, with “further casting to be announced next year” according to a BBC spokeswoman.

Survivors is one of the best TV programs I’ve seen in a long time!
I’ve become OBSESSED with it recently, ALWAYS talking about it! I am counting down the days to Series 2! It would be a HUGE dissappointment if they didn’t carry on with the series!!

I hope a DVD box set or something comes out soon because I want to be able to watch them all over and over again!

it needs the reality factor in it, we dont see them constantly looking for food or scared of the little things. they have to much at the minute we need to see them dirty and ;looking for food or finding usefull things! and for christ sake are u telling me after the scond time of being threatened they wouldnt have gone looking for sum kind of weapons? think last trai and the origianl series of survovors? whaty made them great? the people and how little they had! also why did they all meet up so quickly in the first episode? thats mental the original took time to show how alone they truelly were! i know they are only doin six episodes at a time ( which i think is crazy why not at least 12?) but why do they rush stuff?
they need to go back to the drawing board on this one an watch the original, what made that great wasnt gunfights or fear but the aspect of having to farm agen when u dnt really no how? an why oh why is greg a systems analyst? he was a flippin engineer thats why it was so great having a guy that cud build stuff from scratch! the main reason we all like the new searies is tom price! so far he is a great anti hero! so please dont f”%k it up like the bbc did with robin hood by doin sumthng stupid like making him into a character we all hate! he can be dark and even a killer as long as he is a gud killer that we all still like and he only kills ppl to protect them ! so far so gud tho! max beasley is great casting
!!! and so is the chap who was decarabas in neverwhere! go on bbc give it all you’ve got! make this the series that stands out over all the rest! :)

Having now seen the complete series one, I’m in two minds about the show. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s great. But at the end of every episode I’ve been left feeling as if more of a story needed to be told – as if I’ve watched an edited version of the programme.

I can only put that down to the slightly too lightweight and one-dimensional writing style, which I hope will improve with the next series, and provide us with episodes that have a little more depth, a little more detail and at the end of every show, lot more of that “Woah! Gimme more NOW!” factor – rather than “Erm, I’d like more please because I feel enough hasn’t happened”.

So now we’ve had one series to give us the basic character introductions, let’s get down to some gritty, challenging and thought provoking storylines with Series 2 – or has the art of ‘on the edge of the seat’ and ‘hiding behind the sofa’ storytelling been lost?

    So I should think!
