The final episode of season four of post-apocalyptic zombie TV serial The Walking Dead attracted the show’s biggest ‘closer’ audience to date in the US, up by 27% on the viewing figure for the final episode of series three. Variety reports that 15.7m viewers tuned in to watch the series finale.

The follow-up fan discussion show The Talking Dead (which only broadcasts in the US) also drew a series record 7.3m viewers.

President of AMC (which both produces and broadcasts the show) Charlie Collier told the BBC News site:

“The linear television business is Dead and well.”

“Thanks to Robert Kirkman, Scott Gimple, the other terrific executive producers and the entire cast, crew and network for working together to bring the fans (myself included) another unforgettable season of The Walking Dead.

“To see this show serve as the centrepiece of a truly historic night on AMC is truly gratifying. So many played a role in this success… in giving the fans a reason to continue to return in ever-greater numbers.”

The season finale of season four of The Walking Dead aired in the UK on the FX channel on Monday 31 March, the day after its transmission in the US.

Season five of The Walking Dead is scheduled to be broadcast in the US in October 2014, and will screen in the UK on the FX channel.
