Original series episode Law of the Jungle (with Brian Blessed) on the big screen in Derby

Posted by Rich Cross on May 10, 2012

A rare opportunity to enjoy an episode from the original Survivors on the big screen is provided during the ID Fest film festival in Derby later in May.

The series three episode Law of the Jungle, which features a memorable guest appearance by Brian Blessed is being screened on Saturday 26 May at 12:45pm. The ‘Brian Blessed Television Showcase’ also includes an equally rare cinematic outing for one of the earliest installments of the Tales of the Unexpected anthology Lamb to the Slaughter, in which Blessed also co-stars.

At 7:00pm on the same day, the festival plays host to Brian Blessed: live in conversation, an opportunity to hear the actor and raconteur reflect on decades of work on the big and small screen.

Blessed’s appearance is followed by a screening of the kitch 1980s space-opera Flash Gordon, which features a scene-stealing peformance from Blessed as Prince Vultan.

Tickets for the Brian Blessed Television Showcase and Brian Blessed: live in conversation events are available from the Quad venue web site.

Original series Survivors actors at Memorabilia, Birmingham 19-20 November 2011

Posted by Rich Cross on November 20, 2011

A number of actors from the original Survivors (1975-1977) appeared at the Memorabilia event in Birmingham on 19-20 November.

Those scheduled to appear were:

* Ian McCulloch (Greg Preston, S1-S3)
* Myra Frances (Anne Tranter, S1)
* James Cosmo (Lenny Carter, The Chosen, S2)
* Roger Lloyd Pack (Wally, Lights of London S2)
* Philip Madoc (Max Kershaw, The Chosen, S2)

Roger Lloyd Pack is unique is being the only actor from the original series of Survivors to appear in the revival of the series. Lloyd Pack appeared as villainous truck driver Billy Stringer in episodes three and four of series two of the new Survivors.

No specific Survivors panel or event had been arranged, and the appearance of such a large number of Survivors alumni (all of whom have a large number of other genre credentials to their name) seems to have been entirely co-incidental.

Survivors actors share how-to ‘secrets’ with SFX

Posted by Rich Cross on September 5, 2010

As part of a ‘200 secrets’ feature in the 200th edition of SFX (October 2010), Survivors‘ actors Max Beesley (Tom Price) and Paterson Jospeh (Greg Preston) provide answers to questions posed by the magazine.

Paterson Jospeh was asked: ‘What’s the secret of playing the pain of a gunshot wound in the chest?’ (Greg was shot in the closing episode of series one). He replied:

“It’s just imagination, isn’t it? What you imagine it will be like. It would probably take you to another world, that kind of pain. Your body would shut down. Your blood supply would be going to just the vital organs, so anything else would basically be lacking oxygen and not being warmed up by your blood in the same way that it would have been before the trauma. So it’s basically trying to imagine, through the facts, what that would feel like […] If you undertand the mechanics of it, if you understand what’s happening to the body, then it’s just a matter of following through.”

Max Beesley was asked: ‘What’s the secret of creating a believeable screen psychopath?’. He replied:

“With most lunatics you find that they don’t tend to be aggressive. They always listen and watch, and the threat of violence is a lot more terrifying in real life that the act itself. So that quietness is more powerful.”

Max Beesley blasts ‘dreadful’ Survivors’ cancellation decision

Posted by Rich Cross on September 5, 2010

Actor Max Beesley has denounced the BBC’s cancellation decision as ‘dreadful’, during an interview with Digital Spy. He told interviewer Paul Millar:

“It’s a very difficult thing, this thing that’s happening now in the business, that is showbiz. It seems to be about ratings, and sustaining a market.

“Certainly Survivors, when we put that series out, the second series dipped below 5 million for one of the episodes – all of a sudden, there’s no recommission, and I think that’s dreadful.”

“I think that if you’ve got 5 million people that enjoy drama and invest in characters, you must take the time to not worry about your job and getting sacked and just go for it and hit it again.

“But it just goes to show how much of a business it’s becoming now, so consequently what happens is there are easy targets for reality shows.”

Total SciFi set visit report from series two location filming

Posted by Rich Cross on March 4, 2010

The Total SciFi site’s Paul Simpson has posted (3 March 2010) a report from a set visit he made during the latter stages of the filming of Survivors second series in 2009. During the visit to various locations, Simpson interviews Phillip Rhys (Al), Chahak Patel (Najid) and showrunner Adrian Hodges – who concludes:

“In some ways we feel that we’ve barely begun with Survivors, but in other ways I have to accept that this might be its final series… What I’ve tried to do with this series is give a satisfying conclusion so that if it proves to be the last episode, at least it will feel like a series that has finished in an appropriate way, but at the same time, almost every door is left open.”
