Channel 4’s ‘Fresh Meat’ revisits series one Survivors location

Posted by Rich Cross on November 3, 2012

The fourth episode of the second series of Channel 4 sitcom Fresh Meat (first shown on 30 October 2012) makes extensive use of the Peover Hall location used in the fourth episode of series one of Survivors.

In Survivors, Peover Hall provides the location for Jimmy Garland’s family home (from which he is temporarily evicted by a gang of young squatters). In Fresh Meat, Peover Hall is the setting for a ‘weekend freakout’ for the student housemates at JP’s ‘big country house’ (which his widow mother has – unknown to JP – already sold).

The episode can currently be viewed online through on the 4OD service.

Birmingham – series two – episode two locations

Posted by Rich Cross on October 2, 2012

A recent work visit to Birmingham took me within a few hundred yards of series two Survivors filming locations around Edmund Street, in Birmingham city centre, and the multi-story car-park at its far end (seen in the first two episodes). I had a few minutes before catching the train home to snap the following (click on each thumbnail for a far larger version):

BBC’s ‘Line of Duty’ revisits ‘Survivors’ Birmingham location

Posted by Rich Cross on September 22, 2012

(I’m late noticing this one but…) recent BBC Two police thriller Line of Duty (starring Lennie James – Jericho, The Walking Dead) filmed several sequences in the old Fire Station, on Lancaster Circus in the city-centre of Birmingham – a filming location used extensively in the second episode of series two of Survivors.

In Survivors, the old Fire Station provides the base where the recuperating Greg and Najid rest-up while the rest of the family hunt for Abby (and where the pair come under siege from the group determined to take back the supplies which the expelled Tom stole from them). In Line of Duty the abandoned facility becomes the setting for a series of violent confrontations between detective Tony Gates (James), undercover police investigator Steve Arnott and the vicious gang with which Gates has become ensnared.

Brief extracts of Line of Duty episode four (‘Cover Blow’) and episode five (‘Divided Loyalties’), featuring the old Fire Station location, can be viewed online (in the UK).

Posted by Rich Cross on March 1, 2011

The 27 February 2011 edition of BBC One’s Countryfile magazine show included a feature on developments Croome Park, Worcestershire – the filming location used extensively for episode four of the second series of Survivors, which provided, amongst other things, the stately home headquarters for ruthless mine owner Smithson.

The episode is available (to UK viewers) on the BBC iPlayer until Sunday 6 March.

One week earlier, on 20 February 2011, BBC One’s perennial Antiques Roadshow came from Hampton Court, Herefordshire, the signature filming location for series one of the original Survivors in 1975.

Total SciFi set visit report from series two location filming

Posted by Rich Cross on March 4, 2010

The Total SciFi site’s Paul Simpson has posted (3 March 2010) a report from a set visit he made during the latter stages of the filming of Survivors second series in 2009. During the visit to various locations, Simpson interviews Phillip Rhys (Al), Chahak Patel (Najid) and showrunner Adrian Hodges – who concludes:

“In some ways we feel that we’ve barely begun with Survivors, but in other ways I have to accept that this might be its final series… What I’ve tried to do with this series is give a satisfying conclusion so that if it proves to be the last episode, at least it will feel like a series that has finished in an appropriate way, but at the same time, almost every door is left open.”

The 2 August edition of the Birmingham Post provides an update on the filming of Survivors series two in the city.

An interview with producer Hugh Warren reveals that locations in and around Sutton Park have been used, including “Newhall Street, Edmund Street, Brindleyplace and the Old Fire Station at Lancaster Circus”.

Warren adds: “Ironically, we used the old Central Studios, a big derelict building, with a storyline that involved a collapsed building.”

Series two could see a return to the Doncaster Earth Centre

Posted by Rich Cross on April 15, 2009

As well as making use of new locations in Birmingham city centre, the second series of the new Survivors could include new scenes filmed at the mothballed Doncaster Earth Centre – the home of Samantha Willis’s settlement.

Survivors producer Hugh Warren told the Doncaster Free Press that it was possible that the location could feature in the second series, although he was not in a position to confirm this either way.

More details on Survivors series two Birmingham locations

Posted by Rich Cross on March 15, 2009

A few more details about the planned inner-city Birmingham Survivors series two filming locations have been published today in The Sunday Mercury.

The article reports that the programme will incorporate scenes involving the famous Birmingham landmarks The Rotunda and The Bull Ring. The report also suggests that all six episodes will be recorded in and around the city, and that much of the recording “will have to take place very early in the morning when the city centre is quiet enough to look deserted.”

The Sunday Mercury reports that production on the programme in the city, which is scheduled to begin in May, will last for four months.

It also indicates that there will be opportunities for local people to become involved in the production – either as members of the behind-the-camera crew, or on-screen as extras.

Survivors series two begins filming in Birmingham in May

Posted by Rich Cross on March 14, 2009

A blog on the Conventry Telegraph (13 March 2009) reports that filming on the second series of the new Survivors will begin in May, at urban and rural locations in around Birmingham. Series one of Survivors, in contrast, was recorded at locations in and around Manchester and London.

The Geek Files blog text in full is as follows:

Survivors sci-fi series to film in Birmingham

SURVIVORS, BBC One’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi adventure series, will begin filming a second series on location in Birmingham from May, it was announced today.

The new six-part series created by Adrian Hodges (Ruby In The Smoke, Shadow In The North, Charles II and Primeval) will broadcast on BBC One. It’s a remake of the original 70s TV series by Daleks creator Terry Nation and depicts the adventures of a group of people in the aftermath of a virus that has wiped out most of the human race.

Cast include: Robyn Addison (The Street; Casualty); Nikki Amuka-Bird (No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency; Five Days); Max Beesley (Hotel Babylon); Julie Graham (William And Mary; Bonekickers); Paterson Joseph (Jekyll; The Beach; Peep Show); Phillip Rhys (24; Nip Tuck; Flatland); Zoe Tapper (Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky; The Last Van Helsing); and young newcomer Chahak Patel.

All six episodes will be filmed in Birmingham. The first two episodes will be filmed in city locations, much of the latter episodes will be more suburban/rural. The BBC hopes to recruit local people as extras.

Nicolas Brown, director of BBC Drama Production, said: “We are very pleased to be shooting this series out of Birmingham. We are looking forward to working with everyone there to get the maximum impact on screen for this all-important second outing.”
