Survivors series one promo

ON 23 NOVEMBER 2008, the BBC broadcast the first episode of Adrian Hodges’ remake of Survivors, the first instalment of the six-part series one.

Starring Julie Graham (as Abby Grant), Paterson Joseph (as Greg Preston), Zoë Tapper (as Dr Anya Raczynski), Max Beesley (as Tom Price), Phillip Rhys (as Al Sadiq), Nikki Amuka-Bird (as Samantha Willis) and Chahak Patel (as Najid Hanif), the series was adapted from original series creator Terry Nation 1976 novel Survivors although it was reset in the then-present day.

Reviewing the opening episode at the time, this blog reported:

The opening episode of Adrian Hodges’ reworking of Survivors is a startlingly good piece of work. Surprisingly, unexpectedly good – even… [O]verall this is a hugely impressive debut which successfully navigates the remake minefield to produce a drama that is both acutely contemporary and true to the spirit and ethos of Terry Nation’s original vision.

The opening episode was watched by 6.5m viewers in its 21:00 slot on BBC One, and was widely reviewed in the British press. The evening of transmission, this site enjoyed more than 10,000 hits.

Ahead of the transmission of the opening episode, the BBC backed an extensive publicity and promotion campaign. As we mark the tenth anniversary of the transmission of the first series, we’ll be republishing some of the promotional and press materials from the time over the next days and weeks.

Below are images from one of the BBC’s TV teaser advertising campaigns (shown at a time when the series’ logo include a human figure, before this design decision was reversed ahead of the series’ full launch).

Original Survivors novelisation – review of the audio-book

Posted by Rich Cross on December 23, 2014

Over on the original Survivors (1975-1977) series blog, I’ve just posted a review of the new audio-book version of the 1976 Survivors novel written by the show’s creator Terry Nation. This is the novel that provided the inspiration for the BBC’s remake of Survivors in 2008-2010, and acted as the sourcebook for showrunner Adrian Hodges as he set about crafting his updated vision of a twenty-first century post-apocalyptic Britain.

Voiced by Carolyn Seymour (who played Abby Grant in the 1975 series of Survivors), Big Finish’s new audio-book is a triumph:

As a single-voice, unabridged audio-book, delivered with panache, commitment and believability by one of the original series’ best remembered cast, Big Finish’s latest Survivors offering simply could not be bettered.

The audio-drama company Big Finish released the first series of new adventures (based in the time and place of the original Survivors series) in June 2014, and two further series of new and original audios are scheduled for 2015.

New edition of Survivors novelisation reaches the shops

Posted by Rich Cross on December 2, 2008

With an official publication date of 27 November 2008, the new edition of the 1976 Survivors noveliation penned by Terry Nation, republished by Orion Books has now reached major highstreet books and online retailers. The press release from Orion announces:

The BBC cult plague drama of the 1970s is finally back in print!

Abby Grant, widowed by the plague, is sustained by hope that her son, who fled his boarding school at the onset, has survived. Determined to construct a new society from the surrounding wasteland, she joins with others to form a commune. The technology and skills of the old life are now obselete and the group must relearn the skills on which civilisation was built.

For Abby, there’s a chance for a new life and love when she encounters James Garland, the fourteenth Earl of Woodhouse, who is engaged in a desperate fight to save his ancestral home. But more importantly, she must find her son.

Written by Terry Nation, who notably created Doctor Who’s mortal enemies, the Daleks. Survivors is a prescient and terrifying vision of a post-apocalyptic world.

A remake of the Survivors television series, starring Max Beesley (Hotel Babylon) and Julie Graham (William and Mary; Bonekickers), premiered on BBC One on 23 November. Set in the present day, the new series is based on the story arc of the novel, rather than that of the previous television series.
