Containment - promo

Containment

The first of episode of new virus-outbreak drama Containment has its UK premiere on E4 tonight (13 July 2016) at 21:00 (and thereafter on all4 catch-up services).

Described as a “tense US drama exploring what happens when a mysterious and deadly epidemic breaks out in Atlanta, Georgia, and a quarantine covering a vast urban area is quickly enforced”, Containment is an American TV remake of the Belgium television mini-series Cordon (which was shown on BBC Four in 2015).

The twelve-episode series is in mid-season in the US, but makers the CW network confirmed in May 2016 that it would not be renewing the show for a second series. It has not yet been confirmed if the current (and now only) run concludes with an unresolved cliff-hanger, or whether the show provides a degree of resolution in its final episode

The Last Ship

Season three of post-apocalyptic US Navy drama The Last Ship begins screening in the UK on Sky One on 17 July 2016 at 20:00. The series continues to following the efforts of the captain and crew of the USS Nathan James to restore civilisation and discover a vaccine that can protect the remaining survivors of a pandemic. Transmission of the opening episode of the third series in the US was scheduled for 12 June, but was delayed for a week, due to the inclusion of a shooting scene in a nightclub (the Orlando nightclub shooting outrage occurred earlier the same day).

The Last Ship - season three

The Last Man on Earth

Acerbic post-apocalyptic comedy The Last Man on Earth was renewed for a third season in March 2016. Transmission of series three begins in the US on 25 September 2016. No UK transmission date has yet been announced; but series one and two were shown on cable channel Dave.

The Walking Dead

Season seven of the the hugely successful zombie post-apocalyptic serial The Walking Dead will broadcast in the UK in the autumn of 2016 (taking its now traditional mid-season break part way through the run, and returning in the spring of 2017). The show is continuing to expand its reach into new areas of the entertainment industry, and may be the first post-apocalyptic TV show ever to secure its own theme-park ‘ride’. ‘The Walking Dead Attraction‘ is now open at the Universal Studios Hollywood site, and is a ‘walk-through experience’ (visitors travel on-foot through an extensive ‘set’, encountering zombies and other threats as they progress). A brief video promo gives a hint of what’s in store for visitors.

Fear the Walking Dead

In the UK, series two of spin-off show Fear the Walking Dead is broadcast on the AMC channel, only available to BT TV customers; but is also available on paid-for streaming video services. After a mid-season break, the remaining episodes of series two begin transmission on AMC (in the UK) on 22 August 2016. In April 2016, AMC confirmed that it had commissioned a third series of Fear the Walking Dead.

Posted by Rich Cross on June 27, 2015

The first two episodes of a new ten-part Belgian ‘viral thriller’ air on BBC Four this evening (27 June 2015, 21:00-22:40). Cordon follows the plight of a group of Antwerp residents who find themselves sealed off as authorities attempt to contain the spread of a killer virus.

Cordon is a new series from Belgium. Everyday life in the centre of Antwerp comes to a sudden standstill when the area is hermetically sealed off from the outside world. The cause is a contagious and deadly virus which spreads like wildfire.

The people trapped inside the cordon are suddenly left to their own devices. It brings out the very best in them, but also the worst… Cordon will be broadcast on BBC Four from Saturday 27th June.

BBC Four will air the remaining eight episodes on Saturday evenings (from 4 July). On 2 February 2015, the American The CW channel announced that it had commissioned the pilot for an American remake of Cordon renamed as Containment, set in the US city of Atlanta. A full series was given the go ahead on 7 May 2015.

New reality TV show – I Survived A Zombie Apocalypse – BBC Three

Posted by Rich Cross on February 11, 2015

The proliferation of different types of post-apocalyptic TV show continues – this time into the realm of ‘reality TV’. Taking inspiration from the phenomenon of city-centre ‘zombie tag’ games (such as 2.8 Hours Later) and Charlie Brooker’s ‘zombie and reality TV satire’ Dead Set, BBC Three launches new reality elimination show I Survived A Zombie Apocalypse. The eight-part series begins on BBC Three at 22:00 on Sunday 15 February 2015.

A reality game show set six months in to a zombie outbreak where a group of survivors have to take refuge in an abandoned shopping centre. Survivors just need to avoid the zombies, but the slightest touch will result in death. Anyone still alive in seven days will be rescued by an army helicopter.

Post-apocalyptic TV round-up – February 2015

Posted by Rich Cross on February 3, 2015

The renaissance of post-apocalyptic TV dramas (in the US at least) shows little signs of abating. A quick round-up of the state of play within the canon of end-of-the-world TV series confirms the following:

The Walking Dead

The second-half of season five of The Walking Dead returns to the FX channel in the UK at 21:00 on Monday 9 February 2015 (the day after its transmission in the US). The Walking Dead took its now-traditional Xmas and New Year mid-season break, and returns next week with the remaining eight episodes. The show has already been renewed for a sixth season.

Filming on a Los Angeles-based spin-off Walking Dead TV series began in January 2015, although no transmission date (or title) has yet been confirmed. Executive producer Robert Kirkman explained to Entertainment Weekly in January: “We want it to be a new show that can stand on its own. You could watch The Walking Dead spinoff if you’ve never watched an episode of The Walking Dead and get a really great, rich, fulfilling experience out of it. It has to be a show that can stand on its own. I think that’s what we’ve accomplished, and we start filming in a couple of days. I’m really excited.”

The Last Ship

The Last ShipPost-apocalyptic US Navy dram The Last Ship has been renewed for a second season by the TNT network.

The Last Ship follows the adventures of the fictional USS Nathan James (DDG-151), in the aftermath of a global pandemic which has destroyed civilisation across the planet. Equipped with a specialist scientific laboratory, its captain and crew must travel the oceans of the world trying to find the means the devise a vaccine, and begin the process of reclaiming the land masses of the earth.

The first season was ten episodes long; season two will comprise thirteen episodes. No UK transmission date has yet been confirmed.

The Strain

The StrainEdge-of-the-apocalypse vampire horror The Strain has been renewed for a second season by FX Productions.

Created by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, the series has been adapted for the small-screen from their novel trilogy of the same name. (Athough the future of the world is in peril from the vampire contagion, The Strain is not really a post-apocalyptic drama)

Production on the second season got underway in November 2014, and transmission of this next batch of thirteen episodes is expected to begin this summer.

In the UK, a repeat run of the first season of The Strain begins on Watch on 8 March 2015.

The 100

Series two of high-concept, post-apocalyptic space-opera The 100 premiered in the UK on E4 in January 2015. The show has already been commissioned for a third season.

The 100 - season two

The After

The After, a post-apocalyptic drama created by Chris Carter for the Amazon studio, has been cancelled. The drama was to focus on the travails of “eight strangers forced to survive in a violent world that defies explanation”. After a pilot episode was released online in February 2014, Amazon initially ordered an eight-episode first season. However, the order was cancelled by Amazon on 5 January 2015.

A spokesman for Amazon told Variety: “We have decided to not move forward with The After. We would like to thank Chris Carter, the phenomenal cast, crew and producers for all their efforts.”

The Walking Dead – Season five – begins 13 October 2014

Posted by Rich Cross on October 6, 2014

AMC have released new trailers to promote season five of zombie post-apocalyptic serial The Walking Dead which begins on 13 October at 22:00 on the FOX channel in the UK (the day after it screens in the US).

The Walking Dead: Hunt

The Walking Dead: You Are Not Safe

Season four of The Walking Dead ended with Rick and the group outgunned, outnumbered, and trapped in a train car awaiting a grim fate.

Season five picks up shortly thereafter. What follows is a story that weaves the true motives of the people of Terminus with the hopeful prospect of a cure in Washington, D.C., the fate of the group’s lost comrades, as well as new locales, new conflicts, and new obstacles in keeping the group together and staying alive.

Stories will break apart and intersect. The characters will find love and hate. Peace and conflict. Contentment and terror. And, in the quest to find a permanent, safe place to call home, one question will haunt them:

After all they’ve seen, all they’ve done, all they’ve sacrificed, lost, and held on to no matter what the cost…

Who do they become?

Also available on YouTube are 13 original ‘webisodes’ set in the universe of The Walking Dead TV series.

Falling Skies renewed for fifth and final season

Posted by Rich Cross on September 21, 2014

Alien invasion post-apocalyptic drama Falling Skies has been renewed for a fifth and final series.

Noah Wyle, who’s played the lead role of resistance fighter Tom Mason since the first episode, commented:

We’re still here, and we’ll be back for a fifth and final season, So rarely in television do you get to choose your own ending. […] You get to give the fans a sense of completion to the narrative that you’ve played out. Getting to wrap up these storylines and have these characters reach their natural conclusions… I think it’ll be satisfying for everybody.

Fans of the 2008-2010 series of Survivors can only reflect once again that that series was not afforded a similar opportunity.

In the UK, the current run of series four of Falling Skies concludes on the Fox channel with a double episode on 24 September starting at 22:00.

Production on series five was halted for several days on 15 September when a security guard was killed after being struck by a vehicle on set in the suburb of Burnaby in Vancouver, Canada.
