Survivors – BBC TV

The BBC's revival of the classic 1970s post-apocalyptic drama by Terry Nation

New Survivors book

The Survivorsbbctv blog is pleased to announce the publication of a new guidebook on the BBC’s remake of Survivors, written by the author of this blog and published by Classic TV Press. Full details as follows:

WORLDS APART: The unofficial and unauthorised guide to the new SURVIVORS

Worlds Apart front coverOne of the standout televisual highlights of recent years, Survivors succeeded in remaining true to the essence of the original series whilst delivering strong characters and storylines, and a hauntingly modern setting. Starring Julie Graham, Paterson Joseph, Max Beesley and Zoë Tapper, the remake proved to be a series which could be enjoyed both by those coming to the show with no memories or awareness of its predecessor and enthusiasts of Terry Nation’s original. Due to be published in March, this guidebook – though unofficial and unauthorised – serves as a comprehensive guide to the new Survivors and includes:

  • A detailed behind-the-scenes section on the ‘making of’ the new series
  • In-depth synopses and reviews of all of the episodes from Series 1 and 2
  • Cast and crew interview material
  • An exploration of previous attempts to revive Survivors
  • Similarities and differences between the new Survivors and the original series
  • An examination of Terry Nation’s original novel on which the new series is partly based
  • A photographic guide to the first series’s filming locations and exclusive production shots

The book can be purchased online at a discounted price from Classic TV Press.

Make a third series, put it on later, different time and channel?
Or, gather anyone that can be bothered and crank up the old version, it could hit a big niche considering the proliferation of interest in bushcraft/traditional skills/world paranoia from terrorism etc could be shot very simply and instead of action thriller, it should, it ::needs:: to be philosophical in its content and could be written dramatically but not for show, take the opening third of “mad dog”, it stands out as an intelligent, sincerely written and with memorable performances by memorable characters…

    I shall return

Maybe the third season can be done as an audio book drama. Or like the tv show “Jericho” which was made into a series of graphic novel –>comic books. Maybe it can paid for with a kick starter /go fund me campaign.

I am glad that Big Finish is going to do audio CDs of the series. I am hoping that they do do the 1970 series as well as the remake.

What happens when the plane lands and Tom gets off??? ?I see what the company has done with Dark Shadows, releasing audio CDs once a month.

I am looking forward to seeing/hearing the new storylines.

I wish there was a third season too! We don’t know where Tom was going on the airplane in the last scene, and if/when he will ever get back to Anya and the rest of the family. I am glad that Peter was reunited with his mom, Abby, however, I would have liked to know more. I would not be caught dead watching idiotic trash like Honey Boo Boo, nor Jersey Shore, matter of fact, presently, almost all television shows are pretty stupid, seems these shows based on “reality” are mostly for people that are brain dead, not much to anything entertaining, not so with the BBC Survivors series. It was the best series I have seen in twenty or more years. If it were to come back with a season three I would certainly start watching TV again.

I just started watching this on Netflix and I too am so dissapointed to learn that there were only 2 seasons! Loved the characters and the writing. Love the young boy, who has grown in up so much since we first met him in the first episode. I am not a huge TV series fan but this was so well done, like mini-movies, I was hooked from the begining.

How could they stop making them?! I started watching the series on netflix and fell in live with the character Tom. I finished both series in a day! So i said i have to see when the 3rd series is coming out! But i just found out there isnt one? I cant believe they left the show ending like that! I am definetly not watching the original version though because it does nottt have max beesley in it. I wish someone could do something to make them do a 3rd series.

I agree that Tom was the highlight of this show – watching him slowly gain or regain his humanity because of his love for Anya was so poignant. Not having a third series to continue this slowly developing relationship is truly upsetting. That said each and every character had that ‘something that made you want to watch and root for them in their growth and understanding.Except for Samantha. She began as a sympathetic figure and devolved into an animal. Such a great series. Please at least wrap it up with a movie preferably set ten years or so hence with Anya and Tom together and finally content.
