Survivors’ creator Hodges’ cancelled Primeval show resurrected

Posted by Rich Cross on September 29, 2009

The BBC News site reports that Survivors‘ creator Adrian Hodges ITV dino-drama Primeval has been resurrected by ITV three months after being unexpectedly cancelled.

Primeval has been recommissioned for a total of 13 new episodes which will be “split over the two series, with series four going out in early 2011”, as part of a complex co-production deal (involving ITV, UKTV, Watch, BBC Worldwide and German station Pro7).

Digital Spy adds that: “ITV1 will premiere series four in early 2011, while Watch will have the first run of series five later that year. ITV1 will then broadcast series five.”

Adrian Hodges ITV fantasy Primeval cancelled

Posted by Rich Cross on June 21, 2009

Primeval, the ITV dinosaur fantasy adventure series created by Survivors’ showrunner Adrian Hodges, has been cancelled in a decision that appears to have come as an unwelcome surprise to the show’s producers.

Three series of the Saturday tea-time family-friendly genre show had been broadcast, and pre-production work was already underway on series four when ITV made its announcement.

ITV made clear that the decision to drop Primeval was part of a general reallocation of the drama spend that would see the channel focus most of its funding on post-9pm (and therefore post-watershed) programming.

Clearly stung by the shock move, a spokesperson for the show indicated that the producers would not have gone ahead with the series three cliff-hanger ending had they been made aware that the third series would be the show’s last.

Adrian Hodges describes the demise of Jenny in episode one

Posted by Rich Cross on November 24, 2008

On the Digital Spy web site, show creator Adrian Hodges today explains his decision to ‘kill off’ the character of Jenny (played by Freema Ageyman) in the first episode.

“There’s nothing wrong with the character,” he says, “and there’s certainly nothing wrong with the actress who played her, but I didn’t think she had a dynamic in the group that was particularly interesting. I felt we could give fans of the original a surprise by killing off a major character from the original that they expected to go on in the series, and at the same time create a new character in Anya (Zoe Tapper) that seemed a bit more lively and connected.”

BBC Writers’ Room – Survivors

Posted by Rich Cross on November 23, 2008

The BBC’s BBC Writers’ Room blog includes a post by Piers Beckley, introducing interviews by scriptwriters Adrian Hodges and Gaby Chiappe, who both discuss their craft on the programme.

Beckley also announces that, to assist would-be scriptwriters in understanding how to translate ideas to screen-ready telescripts, the full-script for the first episode of Survivors will be uploaded to the BBC Writers’ Room site and available on Monday 24 November. Budding scriptwriters can then compare the submitted script with the final televised version of the episode…

SFX mini-interview with Survivors executive producer Kate Harwood

Posted by Rich Cross on February 18, 2008

Several important questions are answered in a mini-interview with new series Survivors producer Kate Harwood in SFX magazine in February 2008:

  1. The remake will stay ‘close to the original’ in several key respects – not least in setting events in motion through the spread of a global pandemic
  2. The new series will be based on Terry Nation’s 1976 Survivors novel rather than directly on the events of the original TV series
  3. It will present a fresh spin on the drama, updating the setting, context and storylines and focusing a little more on ‘action adventure’ themes
  4. The new Survivors will be a six-part mini-series, four episodes of which will be penned by Adrian Hodges
  5. It is likely that the new series will be broadcast at the end of 2008 or early in 2009

BBC confirms new series of Survivors is green-lit

Posted by Rich Cross on November 24, 2007

On 22 November 2007 the BBC News site confirmed that a new series of Survivors will soon enter production, following the successful conclusion of negotiations with the estate of Terry Nation for the rights.

The new series will be made in-house by the BBC Drama Department, and will be executive produced by Sue Hogg. The series will be written by Adrian Hodges whose screen credits include Ruby In The Smoke, Shadow In The North, Charles II and Primeval.

The BBC’s ‘remake’ of Survivors will reset the global catastrophe in the present day, and: “follow a group of individuals as they fight for day-to-day survival.”

Head of series and serials at BBC Drama Production Kate Harwood, said: “The opportunity to remake Survivors for a modern generation proved irresistible… I am delighted that one of British television’s great cult series will return with original stories packed with adventure and spirit set against the backdrop of our own recognisable world.”

Hodges says: “Survivors was one of the bravest and most exciting programmes of its time and I’m thrilled to be involved with re-imagining it for a new audience… Its themes remain as relevant as ever and while we will be staying faithful to many aspects of the original, we will also be bringing the story into the 21st Century and making it accessible to contemporary audiences.

Survivors will be broadcast on BBC1, although no transmission dates for the new series have yet been confirmed.
