Survivors remake episode two series one was broadcast ten years ago today

Survivors - series one - episode two - Sarah (Robyn Addison) and Greg (Paterson Joseph)

THE SECOND EPISODE of the first series of the 2008 remake of Terry Nation’s Survivors premiered on BBC One ten years ago this evening – just two days after the opening episode was screened.

Moving on from the apocalyptic catastrophe depicted in the first episode, this second instalment shows how Abby and her band of fellow survivors set up their first community; reveals the threat posed by the villianous Dexter (Anthony Flanagan), (who will come to play a decisive role in the series finale); introduces the character of the self-serving Sarah Bowyer (played by Robyn Addison); shows Al the appalling costs that can come for being a subtitute parent in this terrifying new world; and confirms Abby’s determination to risk everything (including the lives of others) in the search for her missing son Peter.

Reviewing the episode at the time, this site observed:

The second episode may… begin with a striking image of (a now almost unpopulated) Earth as seen from space; but the point-of-view quickly shifts to a small corner of the UK where the first efforts of Abby and her group to find a new life for themselves is thrown into sharp relief… Like Nation before him, Hodges makes clear that his Survivors is above all a character drama not a downsized, low-budget disaster mini-series. And there’s loads to enjoy in episode two – and not just in terms of individual character development; but also in exploring the emergence of simmering tensions within Abby’s putative community.

After the broadcast of this second episode, the series settled into a regular weekly broadcast slot at 21:00 on Sunday evenings for the remaining four episodes.

Full Survivors series to be available on BBC iPlayer

All six episodes of series two of Survivors will be available for streaming (or time-limited download) on the BBC iPlayer service. Rather than the standard seven-day access to a single episode (after which a new episode replaces the previous one) the entire series will be ‘stacked’ on the iPlayer, with each new episode joining those already available (until a week after the last episode is shown, at which point all six episodes will be withdrawn from the iPlayer).

The service currently indicates that episode one of Survivors series two will be available until 23 February (which would have been a week after episode six had broadcast). With a two-week gap now separating the broadcast of episodes one and two, it is certain that this date will be revised – meaning that episodes will be available until 2 March 2010.

Please note: access to programme content on the iPlayer service is only available in the UK

Survivors second episode delayed a week by live football

The BBC Press Office has confirmed that the showing of the second episode of series two of Survivors will be delayed by a week, because of a rescheduled Carling Cup football match.

The semi-final fixture between Manchester City and Manchester United was due to take place on 6 January, but was postponed because of the heavy snowfalls in the region. The rearranged match will now be shown live on BBC One at 09:00pm on 19 January 2010 – meaning that episode two of Survivors (which would have been shown at that time) will be pushed back a week.

There will therefore be a gap of two weeks between transmission of episode one of Survivors‘ second series (12 January) and episode two (26 January).

BBC Press Office latest – episode one – Tuesday 12 January 2010

Following the recent revisions in the BBC plans regarding the scheduling of Survivors series two, the BBC Press Office now indicates that episode one will be shown at 9pm on Tuesday 12 January 2010. The BBC also reports that episode two will transmit a week later at 9pm on 19 January 2010.

Survivors – all six series one episodes available on iTunes

All six episodes of the first series of the new Survivors are now available for digital download from the iTunes shop.

Individual episodes cost £1.89 to download, or £11.34 for all six. (To use the service, you will need to download the free iTunes client and register an iTunes account).

The series one DVD will be released for sale on 26 January 2009.

(2 January update: Although all Survivors episodes have now been withdrawn from the main iPlayer, episode six is still available from the BBC Survivors mini-site until 5 January. This version is the one with in-screen sign-language).

Pennant Roberts, original series director, rates the new Survivors

*** EXCLUSIVE *** Pennant Roberts, who directed numerous episodes of the first and second series of the original Survivors – including the classic opening episode The Fourth Horseman – shares with this blog his initial reaction to viewing the first two episodes of the remake:

“on the whole I enjoyed watching the first episode. Remakes often have a chequered history, but writer Adrian Hodges never permitted his audience to lose the plot. Terry Nation’s storyline was faithfully reproduced, even some of his actual lines recycled. The timing of the remake appears perfect. We find ourselves challenging ‘difficult times’ once more, as Gordon Brown is so fond of saying. What a relief! Things could be far, far worse for us all.

I didn’t enjoy the second episode as much, because it contained more of Terry Nation’s bish-bash-bosh philosophising, which thankfully I was able to avoid first time around. Nevertheless, I’ll be watching the new series to the bittersweet end.”

Pennant Roberts, 28 November 2008

Viewing figures down for Survivors second episode – but still solid

Viewing figures for the second episode of Survivors are reported to have been around 5.3 million (a 22% audience share) – down on the 6.5 million audience (a 26% share) for the pilot episode according to “unofficial, overnight” figures. The strong showing for the opening episode was recognised as an “excellent performance” by viewing figures service Attentional; and such a fall-off in numbers (although not welcome) is far from atypical for drama series of all kinds.

This dip still left Survivors as the most popular programme for the 21:00 slot; and saw the show hold its own against significant competition from live football on ITV.
